Education: The Impact and Potential of AI

Throughout history, technology has played a crucial role in shaping education – from the hornbook, the invention of the printing press to the introduction of computers in classrooms.  The impact of technology on education reached new heights with the advent of the internet and the subsequent rise of social media platforms. The rise of e-learning platforms and Online Courses further democratized education by making high-quality educational content available to a global audience where the only qualification required is curiosity and an appetite for learning.

Artificial Intelligence (AI), leveraging the foundation established by the internet, will propel the revolution in education to new heights. It has the potential to reshape education by personalizing the content tailored to each individual student’s needs and abilities. Learning, which has traditionally been instructional in nature, is poised to undergo a transformative shift, into a dynamic and interactive experience.  As AI continues to advance, it will become an indispensable tool for educators and learners, metamorphosing education in ways we are only beginning to imagine.

AI holds value not only for students but also for teachers and educators. It liberates educators from mundane tasks, allowing them to dedicate time to mentorship and establishing meaningful connections with students.

The world is a witness to the rising mental health issue among the young.  With AI, teachers can now devote their attention and care towards positively impacting the socio-emotional well-being of the student body.  They can play a pivotal role in cultivating a resilient young adult that is better equipped to face the uncertainties of the future.

In the age of AI, educational institutions will also have to rethink learning outcomes especially at the high-school level.  With the new tools, a society cannot just aspire to literacy.  As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to advance, it will automate routine and repetitive tasks, potentially leading to a reduction in low-level jobs. This shift will necessitate a proactive approach in education to prepare students for a new world order where self-reliance and entrepreneurship become crucial for a happy and fulfilling life.  Education will have to be overhauled to be better prepared for an AI-driven economy.

I have an overwhelming sense of foreboding as well as optimism that the collaboration between AI and teachers will pave the way for an education system that not only imparts knowledge but also nurtures the holistic development of students and prepare them for a new uncharted economic world order.  It is essential we embrace this transformative technology responsibly and ensure it aligns with ethical considerations and the betterment of humanity.
